[6] ARTIFICIAL TOURISM

Artificial tourism is a project I created using different methods of artificial intelligence. Using Runway ML, I input texts from travel brochures to train a model to generate text for other travel brochures. The maps in the brochures have also been created with Runway ML by image scraping hundreds of maps from flickr and training a model to generate map-like images. The other images have been created using GauGAN2, a program that turns segmented doodles into realistic landscapes.

With the generated content I created three travel destinations: Marysburg, Rockstead, and Vandeles Falls. Each brochure is filled with text and imagery that at first appears normal, but clos er inspection reveals its unsettling nature. All three of these locations run under the travel agency, The Accommodation Company. This final brochure contains the most unsettling text and imagery that show the content isn’t real, but generated. Given all four, you can uncover the uncanny nature of the world behind the brochures.
